Before you move, there is a lot to prepare for. You have to pack up everything you own and say goodbye to a house that, most likely, was the first home you bought (or first apartment you rented). Throwing a house cooling party can let everyone say goodbye and help prepare you for your next endeavor.
The Purpose Of A House Cooling Party
Whether you are downsizing, moving to a new city, a house cooling party is a great way to get rid of stuff you no longer want or use, or cannot take with you to your new place. Put everything you want to give away into one room so people can go through it and choose what they want. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, so whatever is left over, have a yard sale afterwards or donate to thrift stores.
Guests & Invitations
Invite people who you know would want to see your place one last time, like close friends and family members and maybe even neighbors. You may want to keep the guest list small so there is not a lot of cleaning up afterwards. When you send your invitations, there are templates you can use from the internet if you are on a tight budget and do not want to buy cards. Maybe add a picture of your home you are selling on the front of the card. Typically, people will set the date a couple days before all the moving trucks are coming!
Food & Drinks
You may have already packed up all your dishes and cups, so keep it very casual and just use recyclable paper plates, cups and cutlery. Use a drink dispenser for refreshments, or set out your last bottles of wine or cider you want to get rid of. Instead of having a pot-luck, order food in and make it easily accessible for people like pizza, Thai or Chinese food, or just have finger foods like sandwiches and cheese and crackers. Whatever left overs there are, pack them up in Tupperware containers or let your guests take the dishes home that they came in.
Fun Games
Create a fun way of getting rid of stuff you no longer want. You could set up a Bingo game (cards can easily be made yourself or purchased at the Dollar Store) and whoever wins gets their first choice of prize options. You could create a scavenger hunt too. Number different things around the house and create maps to each item. When they find it, they can either decide to keep the item, or look for another item.
A house cooling party does not have to be anything fancy. Keep it simple and casual and enjoy your last moments in the house before moving onto your next adventure, whether that be in a new city or even just down the street. Let people say goodbye to the home they grew to love but keep the atmosphere light with some fun games and yummy snacks!
